Increasing Walkability in States and Communities: Examples for Success

  • Event Summary

Through funding from the CDC’s Division of Nutrition Physical Activity and Obesity (DNPAO), NACDD convened a multi-day Walkability Action Institute (WAI) each year for the last three years bringing together 32 interdisciplinary teams (across three cohorts) to improve walkability and active transportation efforts in states and regions. State teams competed for travel stipends to support a cross-disciplinary team to attend the WAI where they benefitted from academic and applied learning techniques from the nation’s top experts and developed a team action plan to implement active transportation changes. The changes teams are pursuing include policy, system, and environmental (PSE) approaches to the built environment, and community and transportation design that can alter the way communities are built to promote increased physical activity, connectivity, and active transportation. NACDD continues to work with the participant teams through a virtual Walkability Community of Practice (CoP) as a method of staying engaged with teams and keeping them engaged with one another.  The COP fosters opportunities to share, learn, and mentor each other aimed at making their communities, regions and states more active. During this webinar, attendees will learn more about the NACDD WAI, and will hear from the Team Lead from each of the three cohorts who will be speaking about the interdisciplinary nature of the work, their successes to date, and future active transportation strategies they are pursuing.
