Bruce Behringer, MPH

Mr. Behringer is Deputy Commissioner for Continuous Improvement and Training for the Tennessee Department of Health. Mr. Behringer will create a training infrastructure for necessary professional development of all staff. He will be responsible for assessing the performance of the department, and identify and enable opportunities for improvement and customer focus at all levels.
Prior to assuming his new position Mr. Behringer serves as the Executive Director of the Office of Rural and Community Health and Community Partnerships through which the university maintains multiple long-term relationships to promote faculty and student learning, service, and research in rural areas and with minority communities. Mr. Behringer’s recent grant responsibilities and research focus on health disparities in the Appalachian region, particularly in cancer, substance abuse, and diabetes. Mr. Behringer serves on several state, regional, and national boards including the Appalachian Health Policy Advisory Board, the Tennessee Rural Health Recruitment and Retention Center, CareSpark (the regional health information exchange organization), and the Tennessee Public Health Institute. He is the co-chair of the Tennessee Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition. He previously served as the president of the National Rural Health Association and chair of the National Health Service Corps National Advisory Council.
