Myra Pinckney is a registered nurse and professional counselor with the St. James-Santee Family Health Center, a federally qualified health center in McClellanville, SC. She holds a BS degree in biology from the College of Charleston, a BS degree in nursing from the Medical University of SC, and a Master’s degree in clinical psychology from The Citadel. She currently provides health education and clinical counseling services to patients in Charleston, Berkeley, and Georgetown Counties. In 2008 she received a Legacy grant through Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA to launch The Black Corals Project. The aim of the project is to utilize research-tested interventions in promoting screenings for breast and cervical cancers in African American women to increase survival rates through early detection and reduce health disparities. Partners for the project include Hollings Cancer Center of the Medical University of SC, the American Cancer Society, SC Department of Health and Environmental Control, local churches, community groups and volunteers.
